Manduria is one of the largest and busiest towns in the area. It is a thriving agricultural centre as well with production of olive oil and the famous Primitivo and Negroamaro wines.
There are many cantinas in the area where you can go to try the local produce and buy in bottles or even in plastic litre containers of your choice between 1,3 and 5 litres!!
The historical centre of Manduria is statuesque and elegant with wide streets and tiled roofed churches along the larger streets and small merchant quarters twisting off where it is
easy to be transported in imagination to a bustling trade town.
The ancient Messapico wall also runs through Manduria and it is only when standing by it and placing a seemingly insignificant hand on the stone that it is with humble wonder
how incredible that it was built 3 – 500 years BC and with what science and engineering involved to achieve such a structure. Back to today, Manduria stands proud of its heritage
but is not afraid to embrace the new; the bars and restaurants are in abundance with thoughtful and sincere interior design to create a town that really gets under the skin and finds
a place in the heart.
Manduria is one of the largest and busiest towns of the province of Taranto. Located on Taranto’s Murge, where the roads meet connecting the territories of Taranto, Lecce and Brindisi,
Manduria is a thriving agricultural centre, known for the production of olive oil and wine. It was a fierce adversary of Taranto in ancient times and it has never lost its Messapico – Messapian – identity; The Messapian people were in the area prior to the Romans and inhabited the area stretching from Brindisi to the tip of the Heel. The impressive Messapico walls (dating back to the 5th – 3rd century BC), with their triple circle stretching to the north-east of the town and clearly visible, particularly near the Chiesa dei Cappuccini, demonstrate this. Traces of the more ancient past can also be found in the archaeological park and various other remains; different necropolises excavated in the rock with semi-chamber tombs have been found around the walls. Manduria is also rich in natural resources which are still uncontaminated, like its clear blue sea, with sea beds full of fauna, flora and archaeological artefacts.
