Comune di Sava

From Maruggio our roamings take us to Sava, a town famous for its “Primitivo”, a strong savoury red wine. The town’s origins probably date back to the XIV century. There was a first group of houses called “Castles” and now, in the countryside, there still is a place with this name. The hamlet of Sava was established after the destruction of Pasano and Aliano and of the abbey of S.Maria di Bagnolo. The theories on the origin of its name abound. There are those who assert that it comes from the name of a Neapolitan family, the Savas, who owned many masserie and feuds in different areas of Puglia and Campania. The castle, that since the end of the XIX century has been the seat of the Town Hall, was built around the half of the XVI century by the Prato family. It was built where there once was a masseria and it looked like a dwelling, more than a fortalice. Earlier, it was surrounded by a little enclosure with a moat and there were no towers or rocks. For a certain period of time, when the Jesuits were feudatories of Sava, it was a convent before becoming the Municipal Hall.
