Once Cisternino is done, it’s time to take more than a peep at the “white town”, Ostuni (218 m asl, 33.551 inhabitants), that lies over the last offshoots of Murgia. Walking through its one-of-a-kind stairs and tangled lanes, overlooked by its typical white houses, leads the visitor to various artistic and cultural sites of attraction: the romanesque Cathedral, dedicated to the Assunta, the imposing Town Hall and the Museum of Preclassical culture of the Southern Murgia area. Other places of interest include the “Ostuni Marina”, that is, all the seaside resorts lying on the coast off of Ostuni like: Villanova, home to a XVI century castle; Monticelli, where there are the remains of an ancient village from the Bronze Age; the Pilone where there is a long stretch of beach which enables to visitor to dive into the Mediterranean sea. Ostuni is surrounded by many grand masserie, picturesque specchie and rupestrian crypts, true gems of the local historic and architectonic estate. The San Biagio crypt, in particular, is very interesting. It was built in 1148 in the same place where the church bearing the same name now stands, and there it is possible to see the remainings of Latin frescoes and inscriptions.
