  Comune di Noci

From Alberobello it takes few minutes and a lovely panoramic drive to get to Noci, which rises on a hill in the east of Murgia. Noci is an important agricultural site (cereals, vegetables, olive trees, almond trees and wholenut trees are grown here). This town is a flourishing handicraft and commercial site, boasting a remarkable milk and cheese production and zootechnic businesses that trade their products in many Italian regions. Medieval lanes and ancient palaces embellish its old town and show the rural social background of Noci. A short visit to Plebiscito Square enable the visitor to enjoy the view of the Clock Tower in its middle. The tower, which was built in 1825 and whose shape reminds that of a circular Neoclassical little Temple, was rebuilt in 1901.The places not to be missed are: the main church, built in the XIV century for the will of Filippo d’Angiò and dedicated to S.Maria della Natività; S.Domenico church, built in 1958 based on a project by P. Agostino Lanzani -today, part of it is home to the Municipal Hospital; the characteristic rural church of S.Pietro in Barsento located on the way to Alberobello. Noci’s underground beauties worth of mention include the following Grottoes: Grotta di Gemmabella, Capovento dei Briganti, Grave di Marrasca, Cavernetta di Barsento, Grotta della Madonna della Croce.
