Martina Franca (431 m asl, 49.000 inhabitants) lies over one of the last southern hills in the south-east of Murgia and, from its height, overlooks the charming Valle d’Itria with its white trulli. Apart from a fascinating landscape, marked by the ancient “casedde”, that is the famous “trulli” and the typical local farms, masserie, Martina Franca is surrounded by a karstic territory, rich in striking caves. After a walk through the white lanes of the old town, where Baroque art reaches its best expression, a visit to the statelyBasilica of S. Martino and the XVIII century rooms of the Ducal Palace (where every year the glamourous Valle d’Itria Festival takes place), it’s nice to stop and have a bite in one of the many typical restaurants to taste the famous Martina Franca cuisine.
