The last but not least stop of this Valle D’Itria itinerary is Ceglie Messapica, one of the most ancient towns in Puglia. A visit to its old town bears witness to the Messapian culture, of which evidence is a thick wall surrounding the centre, or what is left of a structure resembling the Parthenon: the hundred steps that lead to the acropolis. From an historical point of view, the part of town built in the Middle Ages is very important, access to which is given through three different doors: Giuso, Monterrone and Arco. The castle is another remarkable monument, with towers dating back to the XV century. Of interest is the peculiar countryside around the town, with its wealth of enchanting and mysterious caves, the characteristic specchie and the rupestrian crypts: the crypt of San Michele and that of Madonna delle Grotte.
